Is it a good idea to use friends or family as your real estate agent?
This is a topic that has many different opinions. While, I would always hope that my family and friends would call me to represent them, I would also say in some instances, it is best to work with someone who specializes in your own situation.
By working with a friend or family member, you will be dealing with some very personal things, and at a very stressful time. For some sellers and buyers, this is not an issue. I would suggest asking yourself some of the following questions, to make sure it makes sense to work with a realtor related to you. Would you be personally upset if the home didn’t sell? Could you be very honest in your feelings and relevent information to give? Do you have any issues talking about personal financial questions? How would you handle a tough situation or conflict? Do you trust them? If things didn’t work out for whatever reason, would that be ok? If you were not related to this person, would you still want them to be your realtor?
For some people, working with family is a non issue. However, before selecting any realtor, you would want to know that they have your best interest in mind, that they are familiair with the type of purchase or sale you are doing, and familiar with the neighborhood or community you are looking to buy/sell in. Above all else, you want to make sure that the person representing you has the above qualities.
Lastly, it doesn’t hurt to always interview a secondary agent. For most sellers and buyers, this is the largest financial transaction that you will experience in your lifetime. You may only do this once or twice total, so getting a second opinion to make sure that working with family is best, is always a great suggestion!
